The Colony of British Columbia was declared by the British government on Aug, 2, 1858 with James Douglas as its first governor. Since 1974, British Columbians have been celebrating on the first Monday of August.

Whether it’s the mountains, the forests, the sea, the many festivals or its history, people are gearing up to celebrate the B.C. Day long weekend. Some people enjoy the natural beauty, others the diverse population and still others like the quirky history of this west coast province.
