What’s up at council this week? (Nov. 25)

We’ve got two out of three councils running this Monday, and according to at least one renowned mathematician (Meat Loaf) that ain’t bad.

City of North Vancouver

How much is it worth to get pedestrians and cyclists from Loutet to Cedar Village without taking the highway? That question is before council Monday as they consider allocating an extra $1.3 million to the Casano Loutet overpass. Upon completion, the municipality’s share of the project is expected to be $3.5 million with the other half of the estimated $7-million total cost paid by senior levels of government, TransLink and Bike B.C.

Council is also considering boosting the cost to property owners in those rare cases when a group of neighbours petition the city for another sidewalk, speed bump or streetlight. If approved, the cost of new sidewalks with curbs and gutters could jump from $42.90 to $132. The current rates were set in 2004.

The agenda also includes $45,883 worth of grants set to be awarded to community groups ranging from AutismBC to the North Shore Table Tennis Society.

District of North Vancouver

Following a 6 p.m. workshop on short-term rentals, council begins their regular meeting at 7 p.m. with a discussion on the 2020 rates for water, sewer and drainage. A district staff report outlines a 4.6 per cent combined increase – an average of about $76.70 – for single-family homes. The increase for multi-family homes is expected to be 4.8 per cent.

The evening includes a review of fees and charges which could mean new costs for both asphalt paving and mono-pour sidewalks.

Council is also set to cast their final vote on a smoking prohibition and to get an update on a survey regarding the district’s official community plan.

West Vancouver

West Vancouver council is taking the night off so why not spend the evening watching the original Creed in the original Rocky – the Sylvester Stallone-written 1976-best picture winner that begins in a Philadelphia boxing club on Nov. 25. Lace ‘em up and pass the eggs.
