Monday’s North Vancouver council doubleheader delves into the depths of the city’s storm sewer system as well as the slow rise of pot shops in the district.

District of North Vancouver

Pot may be going public as council is set to vote on sending three proposed marijuana dispensaries at 1660 Main St., 1520 Barrow St., and 385 North Dollarton Hwy. to public hearings.

The heritage value of a carport is also up for debate Monday as council mulls withholding a demolition permit in order to assess the worth of a 1967-era open structure near 2357 Riverside Dr.

With a pyramid-shaped roof topped with a sculpted ornament, the carport was part of a heritage home designed by West Coast modernism forerunner Ron Thom and interior designer Rudy Kovach.

Depending on council’s vote, the district could withhold the demolition permit for up to one year.

City of North Vancouver

Following a presentation from B.C. Assessment about the way properties are valued and how owners can appeal that value, the city is set to look at spending $210,000 for 450-metres of storm sewer between Third Street and Alder Street.

About 290 metres of the storm sewer is slated to be built between First and Third streets this spring with the remainder deferred until 2021.

West Vancouver

If you’ve been waiting to weigh in on a proposed 26-storey development at 303 Marine Drive you’ll have to wait a little longer as the public hearing originally scheduled for Monday has been moved to March 10.

However, as Monday marks 60 years since the plane crash that claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, we recommend cueing up Holly’s John Wayne-inspired “That’ll Be The Day,” “La Bamba” and “Chantilly Lace," and to round out the playlist you might add Waylon Jenning’s “Midnight Rider,” a haunting tune sung by a man who came within a coin toss of riding on that doomed plane.
