West Vancouver is looking to become a gated community, or rather, a gateway community.

Council voted unanimously Monday night to form a committee to begin studying how the eastern entrance to the district on Marine Drive at Taylor Way could become a “gateway landmark” as the rest of area is set to go through major changes.

The idea was submitted to council by Couns. Peter Lambur and Craig Cameron.

“I think the genesis of this is in the fact we had two major redevelopment projects at the intersection of Marine Drive and Taylor Way. The gateway has always been identified in the OCP and the Marine Drive Area Plan as a special place. We have these new buildings. We have the opportunities to get great public art, transportation improvements, landscaping, paving, and lighting to really create a special place,” Lambur said. “The intent of this is to provide a place where all of those considerations can be co-ordinated.”

The staff committee will meet with the residents of nearby condos, Park Royal, and developers with projects slated for nearby to co-ordinate, as well as the district’s public art advisory committee.
