At least two seniors have died and more than two dozen remain sick in the outbreak of COVID-19 at West Vancouver’s Capilano Care Centre.
In a letter sent to families of residents on Nov. 22, executive director Connie Luck confirmed two residents had died in recent days, and expressed condolences to their families. Two other residents had been moved to hospital, the letter stated.
At that time, 28 residents were still sick with the virus and 20 staff still positive. Two have recovered and returned to work.
“We continue to test any resident with signs/symptoms and will notify you if there is a positive result,” the letter stated.
The virus has shown up in residents in different parts of the home, so staff have put in outbreak protocols designed to reduce the risk of transmission.
While the outbreak continues, family members have not been permitted to visit or volunteer in the care home, which is operated by private company Revera under contract to the government.
Lions Gate Hospital is also in the midst of an outbreak, although Vancouver Coastal Health has not released any details on how many patients and staff are sick, or how many have died.
As of today (Nov. 25), provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said there were 57 outbreaks in health-care facilities in the province, 52 of which were long-term care homes.
