A search is underway today in Burrard Inlet for a man who went overboard from a freighter anchored off English Bay.

Emergency calls about a man overboard from the Hong Kong-registered freighter Pilatus Venture came in at about 9:15 Friday morning.

The Coast Guard hovercraft Moytel, as well as the Coast Guard vessel Laredo Sound and smaller fast-response boats, including the North Vancouver Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue boat, are currently combing Burrard Inlet near Lions Gate Bridge for signs of the missing man, said Michelle Imbeau, spokesperson for the Canadian Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard dive team sent to the scene is also believed to be in the water.

A Canadian military Cormorant helicopter from CFB Comox is also assisting in the search, along with a plane from Transport Canada, a Vancouver Police Department boat and the Vancouver Port Authority, said Imbeau.

The Pilatus Venture was at an anchorage near Stanley Park when the man went overboard.

Randy Strandt, station leader of the North Vancouver RCM-SAR unit, said crews are now searching near Lions Gate Bridge because that is likely where currents would have carried anyone in the water.

No information was available about the circumstances of the man going overboard or whether he was a crew member from the freighter.
