Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson stopped in his home riding of North Vancouver to highlight funding connected to climate change and support for species at risk.

Wilkinson announced up to $50,000 for the Fraser Basin Council through the federal government’s Climate Action Fund to develop an interactive online platform for youth to share their personal stories on how climate change is impacting them.

The online platform aims to “validate the efforts of youth” on climate change and encourage decision makers to consider their ideas, according to the government.

Wilkinson also announced $4.5 million towards a variety of new projects to support marine species at risk in Canada.

Among them are projects to support three marine species in B.C. including the Morrison Creek lampreys, small eel-like fish found only in the Morrison Creek watershed in Courtenay, the hot water physa, a tiny freshwater snail that lives only in the Liard River Hot Springs and the Salish sucker, a small freshwater fish found in 11 watersheds in the Fraser Valley.

In Canada, approximately 544 species have been identified as being at risk under the Species at Risk Act.
