Heavy flames burst from a diesel locomotive just below West First Street late Monday afternoon, scorching the train car and sending a pungent smell wafting over the waterfront.

Ten fire trucks from the District and City of North Vancouver as well as West Vancouver sped to the scene west of Garden Avenue near the Kinder Morgan terminal just after 5 p.m. to find “a single locomotive burning,” said District of North Vancouver assistant fire chief Carla Penman.

The blaze threatened to spread to three nearby locomotives, Penman noted.

It took about 10 minutes to knock down the worst of the fire, which was concentrated around the locomotive’s engine,. Firefighters spent another hour cooling the remaining hot spots, Penman said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. No injuries have been reported.
