After an unusually soggy start to September – expected to continue through this weekend – expect some balmy temperatures to break out again soon and bright autumn days to last into October, say meteorologists.

“We’re not done with 20 plus degree days,” said Tyler Hamilton, a meteorologist for the Weather Network, which put out its long range outlook for fall this week.

“That’s good news for those who like warmer temperatures and drier weather.”

The fall equinox – which marks the official start of autumn and the point when days and nights are about equal in length – happens just before 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Hamilton acknowledged the weather for September so far on the North Shore has put a damper on thoughts of walking through crisp piles of leaves.

By Tuesday, parts of North Vancouver had already recorded 92 millimetres of rain – above the 92 mm usual for the month overall.

But a change in the weather is afoot, said Hamilton, thanks to shifts in the jet stream that will bring back sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Hamilton said that should last into October, before November ushers in more rain and windstorms.

Looking ahead farther, Hamilton said computer models are currently suggesting a weak El Nino weather pattern forming for winter. That usually points to above-normal temperatures, said Hamilton, and less snow at lower elevations, although not necessarily a poor ski season.
