The coronavirus pandemic has been particularly devasting for older adults. The higher risk of death has resulted in sweeping changes, both for those who still live in their own homes and those who reside in care facilities.

B.C. Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie will speak to current issues for seniors and answer questions during an October 1 webinar.

A limited number of people can view the broadcast at Silver Harbour Centre. Seating capacity in the centre’s auditorium has been reduced to ensure physical distancing.

To join the webinar using Zoom, people are asked to register through Silver Harbour (604-980-2474), West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre (604-925-7280) or Parkgate Community Centre (604-983-6350). You will need to provide an email address so log-in information can be emailed to you a few days before the seminar.

You can also participate over the phone. Contact the above facilities to find out how.

To join the online presentation in person, please call the Silver Harbour front desk at 604-980-2474.

The presentation is Thurs., Oct. 1 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

In the meantime, people have until September 30 to participate in an online survey to find out how COVID-19 restrictions at long-term care homes and assisted living facilities have affected residents and their families.
The survey asks about people’s visits to care homes before the pandemic, how often they visited, or, for residents, how often they received visitors and what types of activities they did during these visits.

You can complete the survey online at www.carehomevisits.ca. You can also book a time to complete the survey over the phone by calling 1-877-952-3181 toll-free. To complete the survey over the phone in another language, call 1-866-460-8126 (toll-free) for arrangements.
