The Coquitlam man shot dead at a basketball court at Town Centre Park on Monday night was due to appear before court on a number of charges.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team Sgt. Frank Jang said Tuesday Bailey McKinney, 20, of Coquitlam, was gunned down next to the park’s basketball courts.

So far, Jang said there is no evidence McKinney's murder is linked to the recent targeted hit on a gangster gunned down at Coal Harbour over the weekend

Jang did say, however, that McKinney had a history of police interactions and had “conflict” with certain individuals who may be responsible for his murder.

McKinney's family members were not immediately available for comment, but online court services paint a picture of a man facing a string of charges, ranging from drug trafficking to unlawful confinement and assault with a weapon.

According to the online court services, Bailey Luke Joseph McKinney, 20, faced a dozen charges in connection to a Coquitlam incident on Sept. 23 and 24, 2019, namely:

  • unlawful confinement or imprisonment
  • assault with a weapon
  • assault
  • uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • two counts of possession of a firearm with ammunition
  • two counts of possession of a firearm without a licence or registration
  • use of a firearm to commit an indictable offence
  • three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking

He was due to make court appearances at Surrey provincial court on May 12, and in Port Coquitlam provincial court on May 20.
