Video: Flooding closes Highway 99 at Westminster Highway in Richmond

Motorists are being warned to slow down due to pooling water on most roads

Update at 3:10 p.m.:

Richmond RCMP says Highway 99 is still closed in both directions at Westminster Highway. Traffic being diverted onto Westminster Highway.

The never-ending heavy rainfall is causing chaos on Richmond’s roads this morning.

At around 10:40 a.m., DriveBC announced that Highway 99 was being completely closed in both directions at Westminster Highway due to flooding. Traffic is being re-routed onto Westminster Highway as a resuly. DriveBC gave no indication of when it may reopen.

No. 5 Road was reportedly partially blocked just south of Blundell due to flooding, but traffic appears to be moving on the City of Richmond's traffic cameras.

However, there are reports coming in from motorists in Richmond of flooding on most of the city's major roads, including No. 4 Road.

Highway 99 northbound traffic is still reportedly being diverted at the Highway 91 off-ramp after a collision.

Traffic on the highway is backed up all the way from the 91 to the Massey Tunnel.

DriveBC is warning motorists to leave extra time for their Monday morning commute and to slow down as there is pooling water on most roads, increasing the risk of hydro-planing.

The so-called "atmospheric river" dumping up to 200 mm of rain on the region is set to ease this afternoon, followed, however, by a wind warning for Richmond.
