Firefighters discovered the body of a woman in a tent that was on fire in the Downtown Eastisde this weekend.

Vancouver firefighters made an unfortunate discovery in the Downtown Eastside Sunday night (Mar. 12) when they arrived at the scene of a fire.

They had been called for reports of a tent fire around 5:30 p.m. along Hastings Street's encampment near Main St., according to Vancouver police. After they put the fire out they found the body of a woman inside.

The cause of her death is under investigation, but early evidence indicates she died before the fire started, according to a media release.

Police and the BC Coroners Service are currently trying to identify the woman.
