Update: Richmond residents escape uninjured after 'electrical fire' at condo complex

Fire crews were on the scene of a suspected electrical fire at condo complex on No. 1 Road near Francis Road Tuesday afternoon.

Fire crews were on the scene of a suspected electrical fire at condo complex on No. 1 Road near Francis Road Tuesday afternoon.

The Richmond News understands from residents at the Apple Greene Park complex – opposite Seafair Shopping Centre – that a crew from Richmond Fire-Rescue, wearing breathing apparatus, entered the second floor of the three-storey building around 3:30 p.m.

The cause or extent of the fire has not been confirmed but, according to one eye witness, it was a suspected electrical fire.

Residents were still not allowed to re-enter the building at 7 p.m., with a “strong smell of smoke” still in the area.

Pictures sent to the News seem to indicate that the damage was limited to the second floor unit and the one below.

The City of Richmond’s spokesperson, Clay Adams, speaking on behalf of Richmond Fire-Rescue, said there were no reports of any injuries.

“On arrival, crews found heavy black smoke coming from an apartment and balcony. They attacked the fire and contained and extinguished it quickly,” added Adams in an email to the News.

“While the fire is out, the cause is under investigation and (as of around 5 p.m.) a determination was still being made on when to allow remaining occupants back into their suite.

“On-scene crews wanted to make sure there was no further damage or fire extension. There is also water damage to the property that will need to be addressed before any re-occupancy can take place.”
