You’re reading one of the best local news publications in British Columbia and the Yukon.

The Tri-City News is a 2022 Ma Murray Award finalist for overall excellence in the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association’s (BCYCNA) largest circulation category.

The annual competition recognizes the best writing, photography, advertising, digital coverage and community contributions from nearly 100 publications.

It’s the third consecutive year the Tri-City News has been among the three finalists for a general excellence award.

Also nominated this year are the Surrey Now-Leader and a sister paper in the Glacier Media family, the Richmond News.

Overall, Glacier publications are finalists for 31 team and individual awards.

An action photo from last fall’s Fraser North boys high school soccer playoffs by Tri-City News’ photographer/reporter Mario Bartel is also a finalist for best sports photo in the over 10,000 circulation category.

Winners will be announced May 14.

The Ma Murrays are named for the late newspaper pioneer Margaret “Ma” Murray who was a co-founder and editor of several newspapers in B.C.

She and her husband, George, maintained a home in Anmore they built in 1916, but it was torn down 2017.

Also, last week former Tri-City News' reporter Stefan Labbé was nominated by the National Newspaper Awards for a Cora Hind Award for Beat Reporting.

He now covers environmental issues for all Glacier Media publications.
