A teenaged motorcyclist sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries after they were involved in a motor vehicle collision in Port Coquitlam.

On Thursday morning (March 3), they were seen holding a cell phone while operating their two-wheeler before they were involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle.

And while Coquitlam RCMP continues to investigate the cause of the collision itself, the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is now trying to figure out if police actions led to the youth's injuries.

Before 11 a.m., Mounties were conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Coquitlam Avenue when they saw a young motorcyclist holding a mobile phone.

Officers conducted a U-turn to pull them over, but the youth was then involved in a collision near the intersection of Shaughnessy Street and Prairie Avenue.

Paramedics took them to "an area hospital" to be treated for their injuries, explains an IIO news release today (March 4), noting the driver of the vehicle was not seriously injured.

The IIO states no other details are being made public at this time.

Anyone with more information about the investigation is encouraged to contact IIO's witness line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or go online to the B.C. police watchdog's website.
