A sentencing hearing has been set in court for the man accused of causing the death of Richmond woman Christy Mahy in 2014.

After 12 appearances at Richmond Provincial Court in five months, Erjon Kashari now has two days in court set aside in March to decide his fate after being charged with criminal negligence causing the death of 36-year-old Mahy at the intersection of Russ Baker Way and the Dinsmore Bridge.

The BC Prosecution Service told the Richmond News that Kashari, who was extradited from Albania last August to face the charge, has yet to enter a plea, despite the sentencing hearing being set.

Family and friends of Mahy – some of whom wanted to attend the court appearances and took time off work and arranged childcare to do so - have expressed their frustration and disgust at the number of deferrals in court.

Since the horrific accident in 2014, the News has reported how the Pontiac SUV Kashari was driving plowed into Mahy as she stood at an intersection sidewalk, waiting for the lights to change.

Kashari was in Canada on a work permit at the time of the accident and he was later able to leave the country, despite the fact he remained at the scene and there being witnesses.

It took five years to charge him, in his absence, with causing Mahy’s death.

Mahy’s father, Ron, fought long and hard to get answers from the authorities and ultimately bring the driver accused of causing his daughter’s death back to Canada to face the charges.
