CONDUCTING INQUIRIES: Powell River RCMP, with assistance from outside police investigators, are looking into an incident where a man was injured in some form of attack. Police have not divulged the nature of the attack but state that it appears to be a targeted incident.

A targeted attack in the qathet region has sent a man to hospital.

According to a media release from BC RCMP communications services, on June 20, just after 11 pm, Powell River RCMP responded to the 2200 block of Zilinsky Road after it was reported that a man was suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The Peak contacted sergeant Chris Manseau, division media relations officer, to determine the nature of the incident. Manseau said he had spoken with investigators in the Powell River detachment and they wanted to hold back on that information for the time being.

“They want to talk to a couple of people in the community first and get their unbiased opinions and witness statements,” said Manseau.

In the media release, Manseau stated that on arrival, first responders found a 38-year-old man suffering from a targeted attack and in need of immediate medical attention. The man was treated at the scene for his injuries by BC Ambulance and immediately transported to hospital for treatment.

The Vancouver Island RCMP general investigation section has been contacted and is currently assisting with the investigation in Powell River, according to Manseau. Members of the forensic identification section (FIS) from Courtenay, BC, will also be assisting during this investigation, he added.

Currently, investigators are conducting neighbourhood enquiries, speaking with possible witnesses and canvassing for audio and video surveillance, stated Manseau. This investigation is expected to last several days, and the public should expect to see an increase in police presence in the area, he added.

“Although this incident is in its infancy, investigators believe this was a targeted event, and there is no perceived threat to the public at this time,” stated Manseau.

He added that if people have information about this incident and have not yet been contacted by the RCMP, investigators are urging those individuals to contact them at 604.485.6255.
