Port Moody police under investigation after suspect jumps from third floor balcony to evade arrest

An independent investigation is being conducted into the Port Moody Police Department (PMPD) after a man was seriously injured while attempting to evade arrest.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is looking into the incident that took place in Port Moody last Wednesday (Sept. 15).

According to an IIO release, the incident happened at about 3 p.m. when PMPD police attempted to arrest a man — on outstanding warrants — from a residence on April Road.

The man reportedly escaped from a third storey balcony and fled on foot; however, officers pursued the man for a short distance before he was taken into custody.

During the incident, the man was seriously hurt and had to be taken to hospital for treatment, according to the release.

“The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played a role in the injuries,” the release states.
