Richmond Mounties have released more details of the assault last week at Hugh Boyd secondary that led to a 14-year-old girl being taken to hospital.

The Richmond News reported last Friday how Janice Xie was badly beaten by an older male student outside the school office on Thursday.

Her family waived her right to anonymity to tell the News about the extent of her injuries, including the fact that the young girl was rendered unconscious from the apparently unprovoked attack.

On Tuesday, the RCMP released a statement saying that the youth arrested by police – and later released to his legal guardian – is a 17-year-old male.

Incident involved two students

The incident, added police, “appears to have involved two students at the school. Emergency Health Services transported a 14-year-old female to hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries.”

Due to privacy concerns and the confines of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Richmond RCMP cannot release further details or the names of those involved.

“We recognize that these types of incidents can have a detrimental effect on an entire school community,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson, of Richmond RCMP.

“Richmond RCMP’s Victim Services personnel and School Liaison Officers are engaged and working with the Richmond School District to ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected.”

This investigation remains ongoing.

A spokesperson for the Richmond School District said last Friday that the school administration “attended to this incident immediately” and that a “student immediately called the parents and notified the school administration that she had done so.

It’s understood that the male student in question has been suspended by the school.
