On Our Radar: Trio of tree-chipping causes to benefit Coquitlam community groups

By donation, you can watch your Christmas tree be thrown through the woodchipper and shred into a million pieces.

How do you plan on getting rid of your real, authentic Christmas tree after the holidays are over?

Coquitlam residents who decided to place one in their homes this year are being offered opportunities to properly dispose of them, while also financially assisting several local organizations in the process.

In an effort to reduce waste that normally accumulates over the holidays, the city is set to host a trio of tree chipping events in January for the benefit of local community groups and their causes.

This includes Friends of Mundy Park, the Kinsmen Club of Coquitlam and Scouts francophone de Maillardville.

Each station — by donation only — is set to follow COVID-19 health and safety protocols and trees must be free of decorations, tinsel or other add-ons, such as stands.

Now, if you can't make it to the tree-chipping events, officials recommend bringing natural Christmas trees to the Coquitlam Recycling and Waste Centre — located at 1200 United Blvd. — which is free for local residents with ID proving they live in the community.

You can also place your tree in your green cart for pick-up.

However, it must be cut down to one-metre length pieces that are 10 cm in diameter, and the lid must be completely closed.

For more information, you're encouraged to visit the tree chipping pages on the City of Coquitlam website.

The locations and schedules of the tree-chipping stations are as follows:

    • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
