On Our Radar: 'Tis the season for holiday-themed ice skating at Coquitlam's Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex

The city and FortisBC are encouraging everyone to dress-up in the holiday spirit during several drop-ins until the New Year.

The City of Coquitlam and FortisBC are teaming up to hosting a series of drop-in skating events for families at Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.

Nothing screams holiday fun with family and friends than a skate around the local rink — or maybe lightly bumping your sibling to the surface and blasting them with a snow shower in the face.

Sorry, that would be mean.

But kidding aside, there are several new drop-in skating times scheduled at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.) starting this weekend and through until New Years Day (Jan. 1, 2022).

And each will feature a unique holiday theme.

The City of Coquitlam has teamed up with FortisBC, a province-wide energy company, to make the 75-to-90-minute events possible and aim to bring the community together to enjoy the winter season.

Both parties are even encouraging participants to dress up in their best holiday attire before lacing up the skates.

"FortisBC has long been a supporter of Coquitlam community events, partnering with the City to provide and enhance community events and initiatives to Coquitlam residents," a news release explains, noting family admission rates will apply.

'In 2016, 2017 and 2018, FortisBC was the Presenting Partner of Neighbourhood Nights, a popular summer park program. In past years, FortisBC was also a supporter of Coquitlam’s Canada Day event."

Skaters won't have to pre-register, but will be first-come, first-serve and capacity limits will be enforced to follow current COVID-19 public health and safety protocols.

This also includes mandatory masks for those aged five years and older. They can be removed when on the ice.

Proof of vaccination against the virus will also be required for those 12 years and older. Skaters aged 18 and up must also show a piece of government ID.

For more information on drop-in skates and admissions, you can visit the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex page of the city's website.
