UPDATE: 3:26 p.m.

Almost every North Shore property has had its power restored  by BC Hydro after an overnight storm knocked out electricity for almost 15,000 overnight.

Earlier in the afternoon, about 1,700 customers along Larson Road were still out but as of 3 p.m., just a few small pockets were still experiencing outages.

UPDATE: 1 p.m.

All but about 1,700 homes and businesses left without power since early Tuesday morning have had their electricity restored, according to BC Hydro.

Almost 15,000 properties had been in the dark since 1:30 a.m. when high winds brought down hydro poles, causing a two transmission circuit failures.

Initially, Hydro estimated it would take until 4 p.m. to have the system restored but as of 1 p.m., only a pocket of about 1,700 customers along Larson Road are still impacted.

UPDATE: 11:07 a.m.

BC Hydro now says power should be restored to North Vancouver and West Vancouver customers by noon on Tuesday.

“The outage impacting the North Shore is a significant one,” says Kyle Donaldson, BC Hydro spokesperson. “We recognize that the restoration time is lengthy, due to the significant damage to our infrastructure, but we appreciate everyone’s patience as our crews work to get power restored.”

Power went out at about 1:30 a.m. when three power poles were broken on two separate transmission circuits due to falling trees and branches that were damaged by the wind. Access to one of the circuits is limited so crews will use a helicopter today with specialized equipment to remove trees and branches from power lines.

North Vancouver school district is now asking students to report to class following their usual lunch break.

West Vancouver schools is asking Chartwell students to arrive at 12:30 p.m. and Sentinel students to arrive at 1:20 p.m.
