A Richmond business owner and his friend donated a total of one million dollars to the Richmond Hospital Foundation and are urging community members to match their donations.

Johnny Fong and Rebecca Cheng collectively donated $700,000 to the Richmond Hospital Foundation which will be benefit the hospital's new acute care tower – also known as the Yurkovich Family Pavilion.

The two long-time friends also donated an additional $300,000 to the Richmond Hospital Foundation’s Surgical Restart campaign to match the community’s donation.

As of Wednesday, Fong and Cheng have offered to match every dollar donated to the foundation’s fund up to a total of $300,000. That means the donation from community members will have double the impact.

“The health care teams are great and they need help from the community to fund state-of-the-art equipment to save more lives in a safer and more efficient way,” said Fong, adding the doctors and nurses "faithfully serve the community" at the hospital.

"Approximately 60 per cent of the population of Richmond is of Chinese descent and the community needs a hospital that meets today's health care standard and demands. That is why I have also made a donation toward the new acute care tower in Richmond and hospital expansion."

Fong and his family immigrated to Canada in the 1970s, and te established his business, CTG Brands, in 1981 with strong beliefs in giving back and making an impact on those most in need.

Meanwhile, Cheng, who comes from a Hong Kong family highly involved in charity work, said she was “inspired to help” when she heard about the needs of the Richmond Hospital.

“Being able to be part of the solution and to be able to help others, especially in health care, brings joy to my heart,” said Cheng.

“Making an impact that is meaningful to not only me but to the community is what encouraged me to make this donation.”
