Glen Elementary is resuming as normal today (May 9) following a fatal stabbing early Sunday morning (May 8).
"The school is fully operational today and has been determined safe for all students and staff," School District 43 (SD43) spokesperson Ken Hoff confirms with the Tri-City News.
A man died of an apparent stab wound after Coquitlam RCMP and first responders were called to the scene around 12:40 a.m. on Mother's Day.
One suspect is in custody and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is taking lead on the case.
The return to full operations at Glen Elementary — located at 3064 Glen Dr., in the Coquitlam City Centre neighbourhood — likely means police have concluded the on-site portion of the investigation.
No other information has been released since before 1:30 p.m. yesterday (Sunday) when it was announced that IHIT was deployed.
SD43 adds the incident is not related to Glen Elementary itself, and an earlier statement said district staff were going to inspect the school's grounds to make sure it's "clean and safe for students."
"The district and school have no further details regarding this incident, please contact the non-emergency line of the Coquitlam RCMP if you have any questions or information to share."
The incident took place at the back of Glen Elementary on the other side of a fence, according to photos provided to the Tri-City News, with police tape set up in allowing emergency crews to tend to the victim.
In a news release, RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Paige Kuz explains the man died of his life-threatening injuries at the scene despite paramedics' efforts to try to revive him.
"Although one person has been arrested, police continue to treat this investigation as active and ongoing to determine the circumstances," she adds.
It's unclear if there was a motive or if more suspects were potentially involved.
