Family carnival will celebrate opening of Coquitlam's newest community centre

This Thursday, Sept. 29, everyone is invited to check out the new 22,000 square foot community centre in Maillardville. Here's what you need to know.

Families, seniors, dance, food and fitness enthusiasts will soon be descending on Coquitlam's new Maillardville Community Centre (MCC) that recently opened for programming.

A free family carnival night is planned for Thursday (Sept. 29) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the facility, located at 1200 Cartier Ave.

Community members of all ages are invited to explore the city’s newest recreation facility and enjoy refreshments, a magician, a bouncy castle, balloon animals, games and more.

Parking is free in the underground.

Today, Monday (Sept. 26), the Tri-City News got a sneak peak of the new facility that is still undergoing some finishing details.

There are polished concrete floors and plenty of wood details to reflect Maillardville's early sawmill heritage.

An expansive outdoor area has room for seating and boasts peak-a-boo views of the Fraser River.

Future plans are to knock down the old community centre building to create a plaza and children's playground.

The new MCC cost $24.9 million, the contractor was Ledcor and the architects were Taylor Kurtz Architecture.

Constructed with two floors above a 42-stall underground garage (with elevator), the building is modern, airy and loaded with space for community programs or rental.

It also has numerous accessible features, including tactile flooring on stairwells, braille signage, universal washrooms and buttons on the floor and wall to open some of the doors.

Operated by the City of Coquitlam, the amenities include:

  • the city's first dedicated gymnasium, with floors marked for full and half-court basketball and volleyball as well as pickle ball and badminton
  • children’s program area with a large covered outdoor space
  • multipurpose rooms
  • a teaching kitchen
  • a sprung-floor fitness studio for dance and fitness
  • a lounge area for seniors and youth programming

MCC opened Sept. 20, 2022, with initial offerings of sports drop-ins and try-it classes.

Future activities include a full range of recreation opportunities, including fitness classes, cooking classes, social activities and other educational programs.

Patrons of MCC also have access to the city’s Financial Assistance for Recreation program, as well as the ONE PASS, which provides discounted access to city-operated community recreation facilities.

Facilities are also available for rent.
