It appears there’s been a slight increase in break-and-enters across parts of the Tri-City region.

As a result, Coquitlam RCMP is ramping up its patrols the next two weeks to keep an eye on related criminal activity in pre-determined ‘hotspots.’

In these hot spots, break-and-enters have become common at construction sites, residential homes and garages — vacant, non-vacant or under renovation — as well as thefts from vehicles.

The new CompStat report has also prompted police to urge the public once again to ensure all steps are being taken when it comes to protecting personal property.

This includes:

  • Locking doors and closing windows
  • Parking in well-lit/well-populated areas where "natural surveillance" can serve as a deterrent
  • Taking your garage opener, house and/or business keys and vehicle registration papers out of your vehicle when it’s parked
  • If thieves stole these items, they could use them to commit other crimes including identity theft and break-and-enter

From now until June 15, residents can expect RCMP in the following ‘hotspots’:

Coquitlam

  • From Clayton Street in the west to Marmont Street in the east
  • From King Albert Avenue in the north to Edgar Avenue in the south

Port Coquitlam

  • From Coast Meridian Road in the west to Fremont Street in the east
  • From Oriole Avenue in the north to Dominion Avenue in the south

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is encouraged to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 or call 9-1-1 if there’s a theft in progress.
