Coquitlam library a safe go-to spot during unprecedented circumstances: survey

More than 1,100 people believe the public library has created positive community impacts in the unexpected hits close to home.

Public input shows the use of the Coquitlam Public Library (CPL) is worth much more than a place to read books and a quiet space to study.

Its branches provided a cool, clean-air space for those seeking refuge from the heat dome in late June, as well as a haven during the COVID-19 pandemic in following public health orders and protocols the last 20 months.

That's according to more than 1,100 people who responded to the civic facility's third annual customer satisfaction survey, shared with the Tri-City News this week.

The CPL's findings suggest high marks were given for the organization's internet support, online access to digital reading material (ie. books and magazines) and creating a space for safe isolation.

Community members also said its outreach programs during the pandemic were also very helpful for families looking for activities for all ages, such as the Library Link mobile vehicle, immersive reality books and coding robots or kids.

During the heat dome, a total of 4,222 people utilized the City Centre and Poirier branches and their extended hours to escape the 40-plus degree temperatures between June 27 and 29.

Looking ahead to 2022, the CPL says there are areas where it'll look to improve services.

This includes balancing programs between the two branches, reviewing the technology available for visitors and investing in more unique outreach initiatives.

The survey also showed low awareness of services like lendable technology and accessibility for print-disabled customers.
