While boats usually don't have to worry about what's above them, a sailboat has lost part of its mast after a weekend incident involving a bridge.

Around 8 p.m. June 19 a family sailing a boat from Cooper Boating Rentals were passing under the Cambie Bridge when they hit a spot of trouble. And the bridge above.

First on the scene was an Aquabus, which unloaded the family while the operator remained aboard, according to an email from a Coast Guard spokesperson. Luckily, no one was injured.

"A crew from Kitsilano Coast Guard station also responded," writes spokesperson Michelle Imbeau. "They saw that the mast on the sailboat had broken. They started to escort the sailing vessel towards Cooper Boating Rentals, then the rental company came out and finished the escort into Granville Island."

A few people watched the incident unfold from shore, and shared videos on social media.
