Charges have been recommended against the driver who caused a fatal crash involving a Richmond resident at the Peace Arch border last year.

Tom Cheung, who was also the lead pastor at the Port Moody Pacific Grace MB Church, died when a Porsche Cayenne slammed into the back of his minivan at the crossing in May of last year.

The force of the crash sent both vehicles flying into a nearby flowerbed, where Cheung’s minivan caught fire.

He died at the scene, while another person was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Porsche was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Surrey RCMP said on Monday that a report has been sent to the BC Prosecution Service for approval. No other details were given.

Rev. Cheung spent many years living in Richmond after emigrating from Hong Kong in 1996.

According to a statement released by friends of the family at the time of the accident, Cheung was a “loving husband of Athens, a caring devoted father of Solomon, Benjamin and Elisha; and a generous Pastor with lots of love and patience to many.”

Cheung lived with his family near No. 9 Road and Westminster Highway for many years.
