The City of Burnaby and United Way are partnering to provide free menstrual products through a six month pilot project.

Free menstrual products will soon be available to Burnaby residents thanks to a six-month pilot project being launched by the City of Burnaby and United Way.

In a news release, the city announced it has partnered with the United Way's Period Promise Campaign, aimed at tackling period poverty by providing free tampons and sanitary pads to those who need them.

Between January and July of 2022, anyone can access free menstrual products through dispensers installed in public washrooms at the following six public facilities in Burnaby:

  • Cameron Recreation Complex
  • Edmonds Community Centre
  • Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool & Fitness Centre
  • Shadbolt Centre for the Arts
  • Tommy Douglas Library
  • McGill Library

"The 6-month pilot program aims to help low-income residents, including girls, women and transgender individuals who struggle to afford menstrual products they need," the release reads.

"Often they are forced to choose between buying sanitary products or food for their families and also miss out on school, work, and other ways to participate in society.

"The Period Promise campaign builds on the City’s ongoing effort to expand community access to menstrual products."
