Burnaby opening cooling centres to help during dangerous heat wave

With temperatures forecast in the high 30s for the next couple of days, the City of Burnaby is opening cooling locations for the vulnerable, unhoused and anyone seeking refuge. 

As of tomorrow (June 26), three cooling locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in underground parking facilities at the following locations: 

  • Edmonds Community Centre (7433 Edmonds St.) 
  • McGill Library (4595 Albert St.) 
  • Bob Prittie Metrotown Library (6100 Willingdon Ave.) 

"These cooling locations are intended to provide temporary relief and include seating, water and washroom facilities," an announcement reads. 

"City staff will be onsite and will be able to provide information on additional resources that may be available to assist people dealing with the heat. Masks must be worn at all times while visiting a cooling location."

The city adds residents are welcome to drop-in to any of the city library branches during library operating hours to escape the heat, but capacity limits are still in place due to COVID-19. 

"The City encourages residents to check on their neighbours, friends and family members in case they need help during the extreme heat."
