Don’t wait for Santa. Be one.

That’s the challenge Home Instead Senior Care in West Vancouver is putting forward as it charges ahead with its annual Be A Santa to A Senior program.

Until Dec. 14, the public is invited to visit its Home Instead location in West Vancouver (301-2232 Marine Dr.), as well as Thrifty Food’s in North Vancouver (120-845 Marine Dr.), where they’ll find a decorated tree adorned with ornaments with names of seniors-in-need and their desired gift.

Shoppers can grab an ornament, buy the requested gift and return it the store with the ornament attached, where it will then be wrapped and delivered to local seniors just in time for the holidays.

Seniors eligible for the program are often low income, living with mental illness, or experiencing social isolation.

“There’s such a focus on kids at Christmas time and seniors get forgotten and a lot of times they have no one,” said Home Instead client care manager Shelagh Wright. “It’s an amazing event. ... Our franchise has been doing it for 11 years.”
