Hosting an outdoor dinner party is not always as simple as hosting one from the comfort of inside.

Weather can wreak havoc on your plans, so it’s always a good idea to be prepared for unexpected wind or lack of shade when entertaining outdoors.

Here are a few ideas to help you prepare for your outdoor evening so you can relax and enjoy the company of a few good friends.

Experience has taught me that “no fuss” table settings are the way to go. The more items on the table, the higher the probability that something will go awry. Use tablecloth weights or simple rocks to keep yours from blowing in the wind. Or, go with no tablecloth at all. Be sure your table is wind-proof.

Have comfortable seating for your guests. Let them sink into pillows and allow them to linger through the evening.

If you can procure weatherproof cushions, that is best.

I always like to use weighted dishes over the paper variety. As much as we appreciate the ease of paper plates, the paper varieties tend to blow everywhere and it’s always best to go environmentally friendly.

Think about a tent. There are all kinds of portable and affordable outdoor entertaining tents available now at physical retailers or online.

Tents are great to protect your guests from unexpected rain or full sunshine on a hot day.

Another great item to have on hand is a patio umbrella. Not only will it keep the rain and sunshine off your guests but it will also help define your outdoor space.

Look for affordable patio umbrellas at your local hardware store or on wayfair.ca.

Keep your florals to a minimum. Borrow from your garden and use heavyweight floral containers.

Bug proof your evening by having insect-repellent candles on hand.

Other outdoor supplies such as blankets and extra towels for cleanup can also help the evening good smoothly.

Planning your outdoor evening properly will help you feel more confident facing the potential weather conditions.
