Paging all would-be doctors, your presence is requested at the HOpe Centre.

North Shore secondary students interested in the health-care field or a medical career path are invited to the inaugural Med Ed Conference later this month.

The event, organized by Lions Gate Hospital Foundation’s youth advisory committee, is a one-day invitational series of lectures on various topics related to health-care careers, and will feature a bevy of talks from medical students, residents, nurses and doctors when it comes to a day in the life of a medical professional.

“I think it’s just a great opportunity for all North Shore students that are interested in medicine, not only just for becoming a doctor but also any field in medicine such as nursing as well,” said Jennifer McDonald, events co-ordinator with Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. “I think it’ll give great insight into what’s involved.”

Guest speakers will include a neurosurgeon, nurse, clinical instructor, medical student, and the assistant dean of admissions to UBC’s undergraduate medical education program, and more, according to McDonald.

“It is a way for the students on the youth advisory committee to share the knowledge that they receive when on the committee … and so they wanted to share that with their classmates and community peers,” said McDonald.

The youth advisory committee plans a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, with all proceeds benefiting the work of Lions Gate Hospital Foundation.

Proceeds from the Med Ed Conference are earmarked to “enhance patient care all over the North Shore,” said McDonald, adding that funds raised will go towards investing in innovation and the next generation of medical technology as the hospital transitions to its new acute care medical and surgical centre set to open in 2023.

The Med Ed Conference is slated for April 13 at the HOpe Centre (1337 St. Andrews Ave., North Vancouver) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tickets for the conference cost $25. Visit lghfoundation.com/community_events/meded to register.
