Alain Gomis’ new film Félicité, featuring a soundtrack built around Kasai Allstars’ music, opens tonight at Vancity Theatre. The band is a collective revolving around 25 musicians all based in Kinshasa, DR Congo, but originating from five different ethnic groups - the Songye, Lulua, Tetela, Luba and Luntu - each with their own language and musical tradition.
Félicité is a fiction film about a single mom struggling to make ends meet as a bar singer in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Véro Tshanda Beya plays Félicité, her backing band is the Kasai Allstars, with the ensembles’s lead singer, Muambuyi, supplying the vocals.
