The band, performing at the Western Front on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., features saxophonists Tim Berne and Chris Speed with the Bad Plus rhythm section of bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King. Tickets, $27, available from Coastal Jazz: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/broken-shadows-tickets-67328436165.

“Dogon A.D.” is the title track from an album saxophonist Julius Hemphill recorded in St. Louis, Missouri and originally released in 1972 on his own Mbari Records, and later in 1977 on the Freedom label. The original track featured Hemphill on alto sax in a quartet with cellist Abdul K. Wadud, trumpeter Baikida Carroll and drummer Philip Wilson.
