Ada Lee - “Moanin’ ” (Track of the Day)

Mono version, A side of seven-inch Atco single

Ada Lee’s take on the Bobby Timmons’ song “Moanin’,” first recorded by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, appears as the A side of a 1961 seven-inch Atco single, with “You Always Hurt the One You Love” on the B side. The sessions were conducted by Dick Hyman, with Phil Ramone at the board and supervised by Nesuhi Ertegun. The latter was head of Atlantic Records’ jazz division and brother of Ahmet Ertegun, cofounder of the independent record label which initially focused on gospel, jazz, and R&B music.

Her debut album, Ada Lee Comes On!, was also released in 1961 on Atco.

Ada Lee accompanied by the Ron Johnson Quartet will perform at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in West Vancouver on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 4 p.m. Admission by donation.
