Asbury Park: Riot, Redemption, Rock n’ Roll.

Director Tom Jones’ new documentary, Asbury Park: Riot, Redemption, Rock n’ Roll, opens across North America with special screenings in select theatres including North Vancouver’s Cineplex Odeon Park & Tilford on May 22. The film, featuring the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Van Zandt (a.k.a. Little Steven) and Southside Johnny Lyon and his Asbury Jukes (above), explores the historical/cultural roots of the troubled town that developed the “Jersey Shore Sound” in the late ’60s, early ’70s.

 

Maryze

Deep Cove native Maryze, now based in Montréal, performs at Static Jupiter (25 East 6th Ave., Vancouver) on May 24 with Janette King and Sophia Danai. Maryze is touring with tunes from her debut five-track EP, Like Moons:

 

Maya

Maya: The Great Jaguar Rises.

Royal BC Museum’s latest exhibit, Maya: The Great Jaguar Rises, which opened May 17 in Victoria and runs through Dec. 31, showcases the powerful culture that rose in the tropical rainforests of Central America thousands of years ago. As part of the massive exhibit the museum will highlight 30 Maya languages still spoken today in celebration of UNESCO’s Year of Indigenous Languages. Ziya Tong

The Reality Bubble: Blind Spots, Hidden Truths, and the Dangerous Illusions that Shape Our World, was published last week by Penguin Random House Canada.

Liam Gallagher

Meeting Gorbachev

The Cinematheque is screening the Vancouver premiere of Meeting Gorbachev this week. German filmmaker Werner Herzog and British anthropologist/filmmaker André Singer share co-directing duties on the documentary which is based on extensive archival footage and a series of three new interviews conducted with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev: thecinematheque.ca/meeting-gorbachev.
