J2 “Granny” missing and presumed dead

Off the Cuff Playlist: J-Pod orca matriarch in memoriam
Granny
Orca matriarch J2, also known as "Granny," off the coast of Lime Kiln State Park, San Juan Island, Washington, USA. J-Pod, her Southern Resident Killer Whale clan, spend most of the year in the Salish Sea but roam as far south as California while they make their seasonal rounds looking for chinook salmon.

Kenneth C. Balcomb, of the Center for Whale Research, last saw J2 “Granny,” the orca matriarch of J-Pod, on Oct. 12, 2016 “as she swam north in Haro Strait far ahead of the others. Perhaps other dedicated whale-watchers have seen her since then, but by year’s end she is officially missing from the SRKW population, and with regret we now consider her deceased.” (whaleresearch.com).
