Dinghies of Deep Cove: Milestone birthday brings boating gift

Whether it’s a yacht or a sport cruiser, we get the scoop on watercrafts that call the Cove home. For August we feature The Mari Lyn, belonging to Jim Buchholtz who is an owner/operator in the commercial trucking industry.

My boat, the Mari Lyn, is a 1979, 36-foot Uniflite. I just acquired this Uniflite last year but had a 28-foot Uniflite for the past 12 years that was a little small.

The Mari Lyn was in need of a complete refit (new engines, transmission, fuel tanks and wiring) and as a Uniflite fan, I decided to take the project on. Now complete it is time to enjoy it. Every summer with a couple of other boats from Deep Cove we head out on a two-week trip up the coast or to the Gulf Islands, always a great time.

I have lived in Deep Cove for the past 26 years. It was the only affordable place to buy a house in 1991. How things have changed. Fifteen years ago on my 40th birthday, I decided to buy a boat and join the Deep Cove Yacht Club.

With two young kids at the time our family was out on the boat every weekend we could. The DCYC outstation at the end of the Arm is just as nice as anywhere up the Coast, but an hour away in your backyard.

The best day on the water is having a few glasses of wine, living off the sea and watching the sun go down – it doesn’t get much better. ■
