In his new book, Charred Horses, released in December, longtime Deep Cove resident and poet Jon Ferry, a self-described “controversial” former Province newspaper columnist, uses the haunting image of horses burned to death in a B.C. wildfire as the symbol of a possible nuclear meltdown or other global convulsion.

These days Ferry finds solace and poetic inspiration at Cates Park/Whey-ah-Wichen, with its “unusual beauty, strategic location and rich native and settler history.”

In Charred Horses, Ferry’s poems explore everything from matchmaking, parenting and aging to international political extremism.
