An employee at a Safeway grocery store in Vancouver's West End neighbourhood has tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Sobeys, Inc., parent company of local grocery chains Safeway, Thrifty Foods, and franchise operation FreshCo, reports store employee COVID-19 test positive cases on its public web portal.

Recent updates to its team member case count include the following store in Metro Vancouver:

  • Safeway - 1611 Davie Street, Vancouver: The last day the store employee worked was Jan. 11

The store is not considered a public exposure site by Vancouver Coastal Health.

Previously this month, Sobeys announced employee COVID-19 cases for Safeway stores in Richmond and Surrey, as well as at one of its Chalo by FreshCo franchise stores in Surrey.

This week, retail giant Loblaw Companies Ltd, which operates familiar chains in B.C. like Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, and Shoppers Drug Mart, indicated workers at Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Surrey and Vancouver had recently been confirmed as being infected with the coronavirus. Additionally, the company has reported store worker COVID cases at locations outside the Lower Mainland, including in Terrace and Sechelt.

The Fraser Health region, which includes cities like Surrey, Burnaby, and Abbotsford, has seen a drop in its new COVID-19 case counts in recent days, following a multi-week surge, however regions like Interior Health, Northern Health, and Vancouver Island Health have seen an increase.

The other major grocery chain operating in B.C. that posts store employee COVID-19 test positive cases on a public website is T & T, which is owned by Loblaw. T & T has not had a test-positive case reported by any of its B.C. store employees in the last 14 days, according to the company's website.
