Two-day veterans mental health workshop taking place in North Vancouver

A soldier in active duty abroad, or stationed at home, might know how to handle a sprained ankle, but may know less what to do in the case of a panic attack.

A free, two-day course is being offered in North Vancouver later this month which aims to help veterans and their families respond effectively to those dealing with emerging mental health issues.

The course, offered by the Mainland BC Military Family Resource Centre, will cover mental health issues including mood, anxiety, and trauma-related substance use disorders. Skills addressed will include dealing with drug overdoses, suicidal behaviour, psychosis, panic attacks and acute stress reaction, according to BCMFRC.

Participants who complete the course will be granted certification in Mental Health First Aid – Veteran Community, which is part of a program that BCMFRC delivers on behalf of Veteran Affairs Canada.

Although the course is designed for medically-released veterans and RCMP members, along with their families, the two-day course is open to anyone who wants to register.

It takes place Nov. 21 and 22, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, at the Holiday Inn & Suites in North Vancouver, 700 Old Lillooet Rd.
