Operation Red Nose: Rudolph ready to drive North Shore residents home during the holidays

With the holiday season almost in full swing, it’s a timely reminder that Rudolph and his team of volunteers are at the ready to offer a safe ride home, if you’ve indulged in too many rum and eggnogs.

With the holiday season almost in full swing, it’s a timely reminder that Rudolph and his team of volunteers are at the ready to offer a safe ride home, if you’ve indulged in too many rum and eggnogs.

Operation Red Nose is a by-donation service that sees volunteers deliver revellers home in their own vehicle, which is especially convenient when people might be hard-pressed to find a cab late at night during the busy holiday season.

The national program is provided on the North Shore by ICBC Road Sense and the local Rotary clubs, whose members, along with 200 volunteers, donate their time over the five weekends in November and December that Red Nose is operational.

This season’s North Shore Red Nose service will be available on Friday and Saturday evenings starting Nov. 30 and through to New Year’s Eve. About an hour before patrons want to be picked up, they can call 604-362-2227 or use the Operation Red Nose mobile phone app to hail a ride home with Rudolph. No advance bookings will be taken.

The local Red Nose service is available from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay, and volunteers can drive across one bridge. Transfers are also available out to Burnaby and the Tri-Cities through the other Red Nose programs.

RCMP are reminding the public that with the social season comes an increase in the number of police road checks.
