A pair of North Vancouver moms have joined together to start a car decal campaign to show their support for front-line essential workers and raise funds for local charities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cheryl Atchison came up with the idea of creating a decal that would serve the dual purposes of raising money and praising helpers, but she needed help to make the plan stick. She put out a call in a local Facebook moms group and quickly enlisted the help of Jess Culpitt, owner of a home decor company called Fabled Pine. The two mothers of two didn’t know each other before the decal campaign began, but they quickly bonded over the idea.

“We’re looking forward to actually meeting each other when this is all over,” Atchison said with a laugh as she described how the partnership started. Together they tweaked a trio of decal designs created by Atchison before linking up with North Vancouver’s NuTrends Signs & Printing, who offered them a reduced rate to keep production costs down.

The decals all carry a basic message of thanks to essential workers.

“I have a lot of friends that are doctors, firemen, police officers,” said Atchison. “I used to dispatch for the VPD, so I know how much they're working, including our grocery store clerks, bus drivers … when you start thinking of everybody that is keeping our community afloat, it goes beyond just the medical staff, so that's why it became a thank you to all essential services. And the whole concept was if someone was behind a car going to their work, wherever that might be, and they saw a decal saying 'Thank You,' I wanted that message to go to them that way. You know, kind of like they're being publicly thanked for what they do.”

In their first run the pair printed 200 decals which will be available for $10 each, with $5 allotted for the production and mailing of the decals and $5 going to charity, $2.50 each to North Vancouver’s The Harvest Project and Family Services of the North Shore. So far the zero-profit initiative has sold nearly 140 decals, said Atchison, raising approximately $350 each for the two charities.

“We’re not a big print company or charity, we're just two moms trying to do something great for the community,” said Atchison.
