Where should they put it and how will they pay for it?

Those are the two big questions as District of North Vancouver council voted unanimously June 11 to investigate establishing a youth centre in Lynn Valley.

The centre is needed to accommodate the influx of families into the neighbourhood, according to Coun. Lisa Muri, who put forward the motion.

“It is a vital part of our community and finding a physical place to put it really shouldn’t take as many years as we’ve been discussing it,” she said.

The idea drew support from Lynn Valley Community Association president Gillian Konst, who suggested community amenity contributions from developers could help pay for the centre.

While he supported the motion, Coun. Roger Bassam reminded his colleagues that most of the money the district has extracted from developers has been earmarked for affordable housing.

“(Community amenity contributions) are not a silver bullet,” he advised.
