Drivers who frequent Mountain Highway may find themselves taking the scenic route this spring.

A 200-metre northbound stretch of Mountain Highway above Arborlynn Drive is scheduled to shut down to vehicles beginning the week of April 1 to allow for the replacement of a 1964-era sanitary sewer line.

The $500,000 capacity upgrade, contracted to Lafarge, is slated to be finished in about two months.

During construction, through traffic will be routed via Arborlynn north to East 20th Street.

East 14th Street will be open to local traffic. Southbound traffic on Mountain Highway should be unaffected.

In order to ensure the detours are safe, the district plans to remove between 40 and 50 parking spots. Parking will be prohibited on East 14th Street between Mountain Highway and Arborlynn Drive, as well as on the eastern side of Appin Road. Parking spots will also be plucked from the northbound section of Arborlynn Drive just south of Appin Road, the southbound portion of Arborlynn Drive roughly between Avonlynn Crescent and Birchlynn Place, as well as the westbound section of 20th Street between Viewlynn and Arborlynn Drive.

Parking restrictions could change based on traffic flow, according to district spokeswoman Catherine Haboly.

The northbound bus stop between Arborlynn Drive and 14th Street will also be closed during construction.

The project falls under the scope of the Lower Lynn highway interchange project, according to district utilities manager Shaun Carroll. Construction was scheduled by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in co-ordination with the district, she said.

“Were we not to co-ordinate it with this work, likely, in five to 10 years from now, we may have to rip the whole road up again to do the work,” she said.

Mountain Highway sidewalks will remain open during construction, according to the district. Garbage and recycling pickup will be co-ordinated
by Lafarge.
