A local health-care worker has been raising money and delivering hot meals to people in need on the North Shore.

Julie McAdam, a community nurse with Vancouver Coastal Health, has raised approximately $6,000 in order to purchase soup for vulnerable seniors at three supportive-housing complexes in North Vancouver.
She’s already made several trips, along with other nurses, to deliver soup from Lonsdale Quay’s The Soup Meister and rolls from COBS Bread Bakery to residents at places like Whiteley Court in the last few weeks.

“We wanted to support our local community, our local businesses, and still find a way to get it to people that need it the most,” said McAdam, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic has made access to food more challenging for many seniors on the North Shore.

McAdam kicked off her fundraising efforts by tapping her network of nurses and other health-care workers, she said.

A $1,000-boost from Global Container Terminals as well as $3,000 donation from Lions Gate Hospital Foundation helped McAdam’s effort even further.

She estimates that she now has enough money to keep providing seniors at supportive-housing complexes, many of whom are low income, with hot soup and rolls for at least six more weeks.

While McAdam doesn’t plan to continue her charity project in perpetuity, she recommends donating to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation because of the work it's doing to support the community during the ongoing health crisis.

“I think it’s lovely for us to give back,” she said.
