A collapsed ceiling at the Ambleside Youth Centre has forced staff to find a new home for its programming.

Part of the roof failed at the youth centre on Pound Road, causing the ceiling to collapse and water to enter the building. No one was inside at the time.

The damage was discovered on Jan. 3 by youth centre staff when they arrived to find water ingress in the building, according to District of West Vancouver spokeswoman Donna Powers.

Youth programs at the centre have been temporarily moved to the Youth Lounge at West Vancouver Community Centre.

Information on the extent of the damage or how long it would take before the building is operational again was not available before the News’ press deadline.

Ambleside Youth Centre is a venue for youth outreach programs, drop-in space and specialized youth programs.

Special youth events are held throughout the year at the centre, such as gig nights, holiday dinners and school break camps. It was open Wednesday to Saturday before the water damage occurred.

With the Ambleside Youth Centre closure, district staff have updated drop-in hours at the Youth Lounge and have relocated all youth programs to either the West Vancouver Community Centre or Gleneagles Community Centre.

“We have not had to cancel any programs to date,” said Powers.

More information on West Van youth programs can be found on the district’s website, westvancouver.ca/parks-recreation/youth-centres/facilities.
